Trieste and Miramare castle
In the morning the road will take us through Postojna and Sežana to Trieste, the city considered to be of the most cosmopolitan cities of the Mediterranean. In addition to Italians and Slovenes, there are also Jews, Greeks, Armenians, Serbs and Croats living in the city. Owing to its strategically important position throughout history, the city always played an important role, especially in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. We will start the tour on the hill of Saint Just (San Giusto), which was the centre of the city in Roman times.
There we will see the amphitheatre and the Roman forum, as well as the Basilica and the Castle of Saint Just. Afterwards we will walk to Piazza dell'Unità, one of the largest squares in Italy, surrounded by the Town Hall, the Government Palace and other historic buildings. Finally, we will go to Piazza della Borsa and see the magnificent Chamber of Commerce. You will have free time to explore the city and to have lunch. In the afternoon we will visit Miramare Castle that was built in the 19th century by order of Maximilian I of Mexico.
The castle enjoys a privileged location in the Gulf of Trieste and is surrounded by a splendid park with rich and extensive botanical variety. The interior is very interesting, mainly because it is richly decorated with works of art from different eras. Miramare Castle also served as the occasional residence of Elisabeth of Bavaria, better known as Sisi, and of the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne Franz Ferdinand. After the visit we will return to Slovenia.
